Family, Friends and fans came out in record numbers to say goodbye to the legendary “Godfather of Go-Go” Chuck Brown. Fans got to paid their respects to Chuck Brown during a public memorial service, held at The Washington Convention Center. DC’s radio and TV personality Donnie Simpson officiated at the memorial, while The Reverend Tony Lee, pastor of the Community of Hope AME Church opened the service with a prayer.
I think The “God-Father of Go-Go” would have been proud at the amount of people that came out to show their love for Chuck Brown and overwhelming support for the Brown family. Chuck’s daughter Takesa (KK Brown) said, “Daddy I love you, every word you ever said to me is embedded in my soul and heart. she also told the crowd one thing her daddy Chuck Brown would not want us to do is cry.
KK Brown also greeted fans outside The Howard Theatre shaking hands with some of fans who have come to pay their respects to her father, she also expressed to the crowd during the service that her father Chuck Brown always taught her to be humble.
“He loved everybody if my father could see the crowd, “He would be crying.”
Chuck Brown passed away on May 16, 2012 at the age of 75 after battling pneumonia, in straight Chuck Brown fashion the memorial service was more of a party then a funeral, so I know he must be happy looking down and seeing everybody laughing and dancing.
Go-Go music was the main feature even with the gospel hymns (For those that don’t understand it’s a DMV thang). Go-Go legends James Funk {Rare Essence}, Big Tony {Trouble Funk}, Sugar Bear { EU -Experience Unlimited} and KK Brown {Daughter of Chuck Brown} joined Chuck Brown’s band onstage to perform a medley of his hits. Some other well known guest to pay their respects were longtime WPGC deejay Donnie Simpson, Mike Epps, Ledisi, Doug E. Fresh,Tom Joyner, Chris Paul, Kindred the Family Soul, Raheem DeVaughn, Tye Tribbett, Marion Barry “Mayor For Life”, Current mayor Mayor Vincent C. Gray, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (who has announced that she has proposed August 22 to be declared National Chuck Brown Day – Aug.22 is his Birthday).
