KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) – Officials say the death toll from floods and mudslides in Jamaica has risen to five and is expected to increase further as searchers continue looking for victims of Tropical Storm Nicole.
Richard Thompson, deputy director general of the Jamaica’s disaster management office, said Thursday that the latest death toll includes two people who died overnight when a house in hilly Norbrook collapsed in a slide triggered by heavy rains on saturated ground.
Searchers are scouring waterways to possibly locate the bodies of at least seven missing people. Most were apparently swept away in landslides that roared through Kingston slums built on unstable banks of gullies.
More rain fell early Thursday, increasing the risk of additional slides.
