Michelle Obama is the descendent of both slaves and owners, so a Spanish magazine foolishly decided to bring the idea to life with its latest cover. The August 2012 issue of Fuera de Serie found inside the Spanish newspaper Expansion, features the first lady’s face on the body of painting done by Marie-Guilhelmine Benoist.
The artistic work is courtesy of a portrait of a slave from the 1800s, and shows the woman bearing her breast, wearing a scarf on her heard, and cloaked in an American flag. The identity of the slave in the original photo is unknown, but the re-boot comes courtesy of Karine Percheron-Daniels. The portrait was not made specifically for the Spanish magazine, and is part of a series of Daniels’ nude photos that include famous figures like Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth, and President Obama.
Clutch Magazine reports that the depiction was an “obvious choice” for Daniels, and allows the public to “view famous individuals in a different way.” Also, if given the opportunity to view the photo, Daniels believes that the first lady would approve. “I’m sure Obama would love it, and I hope that someday she can see it,” she remarked.
Mrs. Obama isn’t the only one in her household that has been the subject of racism. President Obama has been the focus of more racist cartoons, articles, and verbal slander than we can keep track of.
